Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered a hip injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s win over the Steelers. It is reportedly a hip pointer injury, suffered after the QB was hit by Minkah Fitzpatrick on a designed run.
Richardson left the game briefly before returning for one play, where he took another hit from Fitzpatrick. He was originally listed as questionable to return but after he “could not accelerate,” he was downgraded to out.
It’s a frustrating outcome for Richardson. He was off to a great start in the game. Head coach Shane Steichen said, “he was on fire,” before eventually making way for 17-year veteran Joe Flacco.
Richardon’s abbreviated rookie season was riddled with injuries. This latest knock left the initial impression of a worst possible outcome. Given his season-ending shoulder injury was suffered at a similar point in the schedule last year, there was immediate concern that he could miss more time. Lucky for him, there’s optimism he won’t miss much, if any.
Per FOX59/CBS4’s Mike Chappell, Richardson is set to undergo an MRI on what was initially diagnosed as a hip pointer injury, or a bruise to the bone on the side of the hip. According to the National Institute of Health, the typical recovery time for this type of injury is around 2-3 weeks.
“Of course, I was like, ‘Man, damn, not again,” Richardson said post game, fearing he’d ended his season early yet again. He missed large chunks of his starts as a rookie, sparking the debate over his durability (or lack thereof). This instance is just the latest which will fuel that fire.
After the game, Richardson said he was “a little sore, but I’m feeling good…I think I’mma be good.” It’s a strong sign the quarterback only suffered a minor injury and will be able to continue his 2024 season.
